Explanation of responses

• F1Received in exchange for 1,318 shares of Great Plains Energy Incorporated ("Great Plains Energy") common stock in connection with that certain Amended and Restated Agreement and Plan of Merger dated as of July 9, 2017 by and among Great Plains Energy, Westar Energy, Inc., Evergy, Inc. ("Evergy") (formerly Monarch Energy Holding, Inc.), King Energy, and for certain limited purposes, GP Star, Inc. Upon closing of the merger, each outstanding share of Great Plains Energy common stock was converted into 0.5981 a share of Evergy common stock. On the effective date of the merger, the closing price of Great Plains Energy's common stock was $31.99 per share, and Evergy's common stock had not yet commenced trading on the New York Stock Exchange. All of the transactions reported in this Form 4 occurred simultaneously upon closing of the merger.
• F2Director Deferred Share Units represent the right to receive one share of Evergy common stock, plus, if applicable, stock reflecting reinvested dividends. Units are converted to stock and distributed following termination of service on the Board pursuant to elections made by the reporting person.
• F3Received in exchange for 11,970 director deferred share units of Great Plains Energy. Upon closing of the merger, each director deferred share unit of Great Plains Energy common stock was converted into 0.5981 director deferred share units of Evergy. All of the transactions reported in this Form 4 occurred simultaneously upon closing of the merger.
